Municipal property damage reported. Between the hotel and the mechanic's garage someone has done enough damage in the streets that walking in this part of town feels unsafe even during the day.

It's very difficult to decide who to blame for the damaged street and pavement. Do we blame the mechanic who used metal tools that corroded the concrete or did he find it already damaged

I have not seen a public service worker so effective as these two ladies... They have worked hard to clean the street here, it's just two of them.

From free community infrastructure to youth skills academies, marriage wellness and organizational leadership. Dr. Z argues that Africa’s renaissance starts with its people, not just its buildings.

By Amahle Nomaxhayi

Dr. Lwazi “Dr. Z†Mxoli is not your typical architect. His background includes public speaking, theology, family counseling, hard engineering, and large-scale development.

But beneath all those roles is a single mission:

Build the African citizen first. The skyline comes after.

In an interview for What’s Next Joburg with Siyabonga Ndaba. Dr. Z lays out a distinctly African model of development, one rooted in emotional healing, cultural memory, family wellness and grassroots empowerment.

“Development at Half Price – With Shared Ownershipâ€

Through his architectural and development firm, Dr. Z has created a model that allows communities to develop essential infrastructure such as schools, clinics, churches, community centers and skills academies at half the normal cost. His company covers or fundraises the remaining 50%, ensuring that communities share both the responsibility and ownership of the projects.

“We want people to have a part in it, so they have ownership,†he explains.

In cases where the need is too urgent or fundraising impossible, the firm has even built facilities at no cost. This approach moves away from donor dependency and instead builds dignity which are essential ingredients as Dr. Z argues, for long-term African development.

Youth Upliftment Built on Both Soil and AI

One of his most impactful initiatives is a training pipeline based in the Cradle of Humankind, where youth split their days between practical farm work and classroom learning. Half the day is spent working on his livestock farm, building discipline and work ethic, while the other half is dedicated to developing skills in areas such as construction, computer science, artificial intelligence and various technical trades. After one year, students graduate with hands-on experience, community grounding and free certification.

As Dr. Z jokes, “I don’t want to see myself holding a cup and yet I’m not holding the cup. I’m old school,†yet he surrounds himself with modern experts who bring cutting-edge knowledge, tools and training into the classroom.

Healing Men, Healing Communities

In his second capacity, Dr. Z serves as Chaplain of Amatyma Movement, the largest men’s wellness organization in South Africa. Every Monday evening, men from a wide range of financial and social backgrounds meet online to share emotional challenges, seek counseling, offer mutual support, build business collaborations, address personal and generational trauma, and strengthen their roles in marriage and fatherhood. Over time, the movement has grown into a full ecosystem dedicated to supporting the boy child, the man, the father and the husband, roles that are often overlooked or under-supported in society.

Leadership Rooted in African Identity

Dr. Z is academically accomplished holding degrees in Architecture, Theology and a PhD in Organizational Leadership, but he warns against education that disconnects Africans from their cultural DNA.

“Speak the English well. But don’t forget your Xhosa roots… your Sotho… your Tswana… your Swati.â€

For him, identity is not nostalgia; it is a blueprint for emotional and societal health. Communities that do not deal with past trauma risk carrying it forward indefinitely.

A Career Built Internationally, Returned to the Continent

Dr. Z spent years abroad teaching leadership in over 50 countries, from Spain to Italy to South America.

He returned to South Africa because:

“All this knowledge that I’ve gathered… I’m bringing it back home.â€

Instead of waiting for saviours from outside as has been the historical pattern, he believes Africa must develop itself from within.

A Model for African Cities Going Forward

Dr. Z’s approach challenges conventional development thinking by prioritizing people over infrastructure:

· don’t start with concrete—start with the community;

· don’t build for them—build with them; and

· don’t simply adopt global culture—adapt it through African identity.

He points out that if African towns adopted this approach, development could become more accessible, humane, sustainable, and rooted in self-respect. A rebirth of people rather than monuments.
